SoftMod Depot ?

October 26th, 2012

So i am sure if you found this site you’ll see that 98% of all the stuff on it is (Out of Date) “maybe more”

There are many reasons for this.

Softmod Depot was made back in the Xbox 1 days of softmoding the Xbox, Our Goal was to help as many people as we could to safely mod their  system, As the years went by we moved to other systems like the 360,Wii,NDS,PS2,Dreamcast,PS1/PSx,PSP and even the PS3.

But as the times went by many admins (as well as myself) had to live our lives and we could no longer keep updating our newer Mods/hacks etc for the systems, So why not shut the site down?

We want to keep it open for all the people who many come across the site and get help from the many post giving help on everything from …(Well read above)  Luckily our Awesome Owner (Smdepot) has kept the site running and giving us so much over the years… I could never thank him enough.

Really… I can’t thank him enough….THANK YOU!!!

Now we are not 100% dead BUT!!! we don’t update all that much as we all have our own lives to live and we just don’t have the time to keep up-to-date on mods/hacks.

Ps…

Thank You all for coming to the site… And don’t be shy to post on the forums.

George Hotz (GeoHot) Asking for Help.

February 20th, 2011

Playstation 3Currently Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is in a two way battle with trying keeping hackers outside their already exploited system and in a legal fight with the notorious hackers’ George Hotz and team fail0verfl0w because of the release of their source code that opens restricted access to the Playstation© 3 to run unsigned SCEA code. Even though George Hotz stays head strong, he is being drained monetarily wise, and is in jeopardy of losing this fight because of the lack of the ability to play the legal bills.

Now, George Hotz is asking for the community for help in his battle against SCEA.

-Straight from George Hotz Web Page-

On the subject of a Legal Defense Fund
Read groklaw, psx-scene, the case docket, and my new blog for updates on the case

Media, I need your help. This is the first time I have ever asked. Please, if you support this cause, help me out and spread the word.
I want, by the time this goes to trial, to have Sony facing some of the hardest hitting lawyers in the business.
Together, we can help fix the system

Donations here are for legal defense ONLY
I checked with my lawyers before setting this up
If you have another substantial way to donate aside from money, let me know

tl;dr
Sony is lame, and is suing me for hacking MY OWN PS3. Help me own them in court

Sony are bullies
Sony doesn’t care if what you did was legal, if they don’t like it, they sue. Sony tried to sue a guy for getting his AIBO to do non Sony approved tricks, making it apparent that they don’t really care about piracy, they care about control. In (Sony v Bleem), Bleem was the winner on all counts, but the high cost of a legal defense shut them down. Fortunately, that suit helped set precedent on the legality of emulators. I would hate to lose this case due to resource starvation, and with the support of the masses, I won’t. Lets turn the bully back on itself. This case has the ability to set a huge precedent for consoles and all closed systems to come. The other two should be begging Sony to back off.

Sony sued the wrong guy
I am an advocate against mass piracy, do not distribute anyone’s copyrighted work but my own, do not take crap lying down, and am even pro DRM in a sense. For example, I believe Apple has every right to lock down their iPhone in the factory as much as they want, but once it’s paid for and mine, I have the right to unlock it, smash it, jailbreak it, look at it, and hack on it. Fortunately, the courts agree with me on this point.
My PS3 goal has been to provide users a legitimate path to homebrew, which by the standards of all previous cases (or, in reverse), is 100% legal. Sony does not even try to allege piracy or copyright infringement in this case, they allege I did things like play “super mario world, an unauthorized game” on MY PS3. And access MY PS3 in an unauthorized way. Who are they to authorize what I do with my taxed and paid for property?
fail0verflow’s goal was even nobler than mine. They wanted to give you back a feature Sony illegally stole, Linux on your PS3. It’s shameful on Sony’s part that they are being sued at all. If you have a problem with pirates, sue them, don’t sue people who point out your shortcomings.

Why should I care about your personal legal troubles?
You shouldn’t. For example, if I was taken to court for sex crimes in Sweden, I would never ask for donations. But this case isn’t about me. Clearly I am not being sued because of something I have that Sony wants, I am being sued in order to send a message that Sony is not to be messed with. But if I(and all codefendants likewise) actually win this, we have the power to send a much stronger message back. That consumers have rights, and we aren’t afraid to stand up for them.

Why should I trust you? I just saw you trying to rap battle Sony
My attempts at humor aside, I do take this whole matter very seriously. Again, it’s not about me, I was on the verge of quitting this stuff last June, and I would hate to be the one who sets a reputation for hackers that all a company has to do is sue us and we back down. In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back. I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project.

Why did you wait until now to set this up?
I didn’t want to be trigger happy, and thought the suit might go away quickly. Also, I had to consult with my lawyers about how to do this. It’s been over a month, and it looks like this is going to be a drawn out case. I am in this for the long haul. I am very serious ethically when I take donations, for all iPhone work I only accepted after the fact, here after the fact is too late. Now I am pot committed so to say.

How much should I donate?
Put it this way, Sony has 5 lawyers, I have 2. I’d like to level the playing field, and really get some hard hitters in there. I have already racked up over 10k in legal bills; donate whatever you feel like. Leftover donations at the end of all this will be donated to the EFF.

What if I want to donate more than I feel comfortable sending through PayPal?
I’m excited! Email me, we’ll figure it out.

Why doesn’t the EFF fund this?
Ask them. They have offered to provide some legal help though, which is much appreciated.

Donate to help you, you’re the reason I can’t play Modern Warfare now…
No, I’m not. Kakaroto explains this really well here. I have never played PS3 online ever. Frankly I’m amazed by the apparent ease with which these cheats were created, security 101, why is the security in the client anyway? I had no idea this would happen, and am in full support of the cheaters being permabanned from PSN.

I’m a poor college student, what can I do to help?
I feel you, don’t worry. Spread the word. Let people know how you feel about what Sony is doing. Let Sony know how you feel about what Sony is doing.

What if SCEA tries to settle?
Lets just say, I want the settlement terms to include OtherOS on all PS3s and an apology on the PlayStation blog for ever removing it. It’d be good PR for Sony too, lord knows they could use it. I’m also willing to accept a trade, a legit path to homebrew for knowledge of how to stop new firmwares from being decrypted.

Why isn’t SCEA trying to settle?
RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE…THEY POINTED OUT OUR SECURITY FLAWS…IM SO MADDDDDDDD…WAHHHHHH

PS3 3.55 CFW = FAIL?

January 20th, 2011

PS3

Well It’s been a Nice few Weeks from the time the Master key of the PS3 got handed over to us BUT has it done any good?

Well Yes and NO!!!

Many 3.50 games are now being patched to play on 3.41 PS3s and this is a good thing BUT custom firmware has came out and it’s not doing all that good =(

-The First CFW came and Bricked peoples PS3’s (Some can’t even be fixed)
-The next CFW came and worked on SOME… PS3’s And had system calls (but the wrong ones)
-The 3rd CFW came and worked on ALL PS3’s And had the RIGHT system calls
BUT not all was happy in the kingdom of CFW land =)… PS3’s where freezing on XMB and many games that worked before was not working anymore, And from reports in Comments PSN games you BUY do not work.

Now i am all for CFW, I love my 5.00m33-6 on PSP BUT if i had to pick
-Stable PS3 with device to play PS3 games
or
-unstable PS3 (risk bricking) many games not working And able to get on PSN (FOR NOW!!!)

Then i think i’ll stay with my jailbreak device and 3.41 As the CFW’s coming out right now are just not worth it.

Prosecutors Dismiss Xbox-Modding Case Mid-Trial

December 3rd, 2010

LOS ANGELES — Federal authorities in the first-of-its-kind game-console–modding criminal trial abruptly dropped their prosecution here Thursday, “based on fairness and justice.”

“The government has decided to dismiss the indictment,” prosecutor Allen Chiu told the judge shortly before the jury was to be seated on the third day of trial.

The announcement came a day after a whirlwind of legal jockeying in the case against defendant Matthew Crippen, a 28-year-old Southern California man. The government charged that Crippen, a hotel car-parking manager, ran a small business from his Anaheim home modifying the firmware on Xbox 360 optical drives to make them capable of running pirated or unauthorized games.

It was the nation’s first jury trial to test the anti-circumvention provisions of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act as applied to game consoles. The law makes it a crime to offer a product or service that circumvents a technological measure designed to protect copyright material. Each of the two charges carried a maximum five years.

“It still has not hit me yet,” Crippen said outside court, moments after Chiu dismissed the indictment.

U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez had blasted the prosecution’s case Wednesday, prompting a brief recess for prosecutors to decide whether they would forge ahead. The prosecution’s decision to continue would come back to haunt them as the government’s first witness ultimately unraveled their case.

Witness No. 1, Tony Rosario, was an undercover agent with the Entertainment Software Association. He told jurors Wednesday that he paid Crippen $60 in 2008 to modify an Xbox, and secretly videotaped the operation. Rosario had responded to Crippen’s advertisement on the internet and met Crippen at his Anaheim house.

All of that had been laid out in pretrial motions. But during his testimony, Rosario also said Crippen inserted a pirated video game into the console to verify that the hack worked. That was a new detail that helped the government meet an obligation imposed by the judge that very morning, when Gutierrez ruled that the government had to prove Crippen knew he was breaking the law by modding Xboxes.

But nowhere in Rosario’s reports or sworn declarations was it mentioned that Crippen put a pirated game into the console. During the opening statements shortly before Rosario’s testimony, defense attorney Koren Bell told jurors that there would be no evidence of that kind.

Defense attorney Callie Steele objected to the new testimony. And as court was to get underway here early Thursday, prosecutor Chiu told the judge that he first learned of Rosario’s newfound recollection days before trial. Chiu conceded he never forwarded that information to the defense.

“That fact was disclosed on Sunday,” Chiu told the judge. “We should have disclosed that to the defense right away.”

In light of that omission and “based on fairness and justice,” Chiu moved to dismiss the case, conceding that the government had made errors in its prosecution.

Jurors, who heard only one day of testimony, left the courthouse with mixed opinions on the case. “When we left yesterday, I was thinking, ‘What are we doing here?’” said juror Paul Dietz, a 27-year-old actor. He said he “probably would have” acquitted.

Another juror, Jerry Griffin, a 63-year-old trial attorney, said “I think Microsoft has a right to protect its proprietary information.”

Steele, one of Crippen’s three publicly appointed defense attorneys, said afterward that the government last year offered a plea deal in which the defendant would get probation and have his computer usage restricted in exchange for pleading to two felonies.

Rejecting that and going to trial, she said, “was a roll of the dice.”

“This was a risk that needed to be taken,” she added.

A felony conviction, she said, would have precluded Crippen from fulfilling his dream of becoming a high school special-education and math teacher.

Crippen said he has a year left of school before he gets a liberal arts degree from Cal State Fullerton. His studies have been on hold since he was indicted last year.

“I’m going back to school,” he said.

Duke Nukem Forever CONFIRMED!!!

September 6th, 2010

We’re all waiting patiently for 2K and Borderlands developer Gearbox to take the stage and confirm what CVG told you earlier today: That Duke Nukem Forever is BACK.

But if you’ve got to head to meet a mate; if you’re minutes away from an important conference call; heck, if you’ve just got to tinkle really bad, we’ve got good news.

This picture has just snuck out of PAX in Seattle. It’s got Gearbox and 2K logos on it.

10 years... Can you beleive it?

10 years... Can you believe it?

Unless we’re talking about a VERY inventive hoaxer, it’s for real.

Hail to the king, baby.

Trapped Chilean Miners Get PSPs

September 6th, 2010

You know what would suck? Being trapped 2,300 feet underground. You know what would suck even more? Being trapped and PSPless. So to lessen what sucks just a bit, those 33 trapped Chilean miners have been sent PSPs to occupy the time. How much time? More than 6 hours I bet. Worst-case scenario says 4 months. Maybe they’re including batteries (or running real long extension cords) along with their daily necessities. And I really hope the Chilean officials didn’t send them PSPgo models — I can’t imagine PSN being accessible way down there. They should’ve consulted us: hacked PSPs with a memory stick loaded full of games, particularly Ad-hoc-style multiplayer games. Anyway, keep up the good spirit guys — here’s to hoping the escape shaft is finished before Christmas. *Cheers* May Godspeed. Now lets hope their games were in Spanish…..
