Reports have been filed out, and it appears Sony can detect use of the PS Jailbreak USB dongle when a console that’s using the device is connected to the PlayStation Network.

The PS Jailbreak dongle (if you haven’t heard of it) is a USB device that allows PS3 users to burn copies of legitimate games to an external hard drives. This then allows ripped games to be loaded providing a game disc is present. According to dongle seller OzModChips, the add-on “tricks your console into thinking that it is a developer unit”. If this is the case then yes, it can be tracked.

You see, there are only a limited number of developer ps3 units. A vast rise in Game ID’s is easily detectable because the “Back Up Manager” changes the Game ID when Back Ups are played, this Game ID is always “LAUN-12345”. So imagine how many games of the same ID would be played a day from all around the world. Not the mention the fact, that Sony probably read the articles guys like us are posting about the plug ‘n play Mod Chip every day. 🙂

The dongle is apparently detectable via PSN, now this probably won’t get you banned providing you don’t do any form of online play/ browsing. Microsoft has already used this to ban modified Xbox 360 consoles from Xbox Live. Having, a semi-developers kit-like system via the dongle should be enough to prevent a full-on ban. Mainly because Sony can’t detect specific hardware you’re using that isn’t in the PS3 already.

The PS Jailbreak is said to work and had been created to work on the current PS3 firmware, 3.41, on both slim and fat consoles. OzModChips says the dongle’s own firmware is “claimed” to be updateable (much like flash carts for the Nintendo DS), allowing it to be updated if a future Sony update blocks the device.

We saw it coming didn’t we? Why pay $169 for Jailbreak or even $30 for its clone x3Jailbreak when you can get it all for free? A group of hackers have successfully managed to clone and release open source version of Jailbreak called PSGroove. What this means is that you will now be able to create your own PS3 (PlayStation 3) jailbreaks to replicate what PSJailbreak can do.

All you ever have to do is to download the code which is available here for free, and then copy it over to a $20 USB development board (AVR HW) of your choice to get started ! Oh and there will soon be a way where you would be able to jailbreak your PS3 by either using a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, or TI-84 calculator! How cool is that?

Introducing liquidzigong’s Prometheus — zzk will worship this — play 6.20 required games on custom firmware 5.00 M33 or 5.50 GEN. Once again it’s a process but you know that’ll be simplified sooner or later… Probably by Hercules or someone.

What you’ll need (download below):

* Prometheus
* WQSG_UMD
* UMD Dump PRX
* PRXDecrypter or ISO Tool

What to do:

1. Create an ISO of whatever 6.20-required game.
2. Open that ISO in WQSG_UMD (or UMDGEN, or even WinRar 🙂 )and browse to PSP_GAME/SYSDIR.
3. Extract EBOOT.BIN to a temporary folder.
4. Use PRXDecrypter (or ISO Tool) to decrypt the extracted EBOOT.BIN file and rename it to EBOOT.OLD.
5. Extract the Prometheus RAR archive so you have prometheus.prx and a new EBOOT.BIN.
6. In WQSG_UMD drag ‘n drop the EBOOT.OLD, EBOOT.BIN and prometheus.prx files back to PSP_GAME/SYSDIR. See above screenshot.
7. Copy the ISO to your memory stick and try it out.

Using UMD Dump PRX and ISO Tool you could probably skip a step or two. You know, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

Also mentioned at the source is that KHBBS works using the above + this extra bit: (I haven’t confirmed it myself)

1. for KHBBS, you have to decrypt BBS1/2/3.DAT then put back to PSPGAME/USRDIR
2. for 5.00M33, you have to decrypt all PRX files (EBOOT.BIN?PSPGAME/USRDIR/MODULES/*.PRX) then repack the ISO
3. orevious modification on EBOOT.BIN/PRX files (like sceUtilitO”) are not required.
