file transfer

is there any way to transfer files from your pc to your box without using ftp?  i live at my moms house most of the time and her computer doesnt support any networking. at my dads house we have a ftp connection, but he has an old macintosh that locks up 80% of the time.  I have already tried burning it to a blank disc, but the box doesnt detect the cd.  Will this work with a blank DVD.
