What I'd like to do with my 360 is to be able to play a backup of a certain game I have, and I want to know if I need a softmod to do that and if so, where can I find an explanation of how to do it in layman's terms?

You will need to modify the firmware on your 360's dvd drive in order to play the backup. All info on modding the drive and burning games can be found in this thread. http://www.xbox360-hacks.com/forums/about3565.html
