is it backwards compatible? like if you have a 2.0 card will it work in the first PCI-E slot? because I want to get and Nvidia 9600 or something but I can't find any that aren't 2.0.
any Ideas?

yes it works, but you wont get the full potential out of the card because it will be bandwidth limited. pci-e 1.1 is half as fast as 2.0

but were speaking about video cards snafu, no reason to get a video card that you cant utilize so it wont work, in fact it will work worse than a regular pciexpress cardmy bad, im used to dual card setups, in a single card setup it wont matter wether you have 2.0 or 1.1

Ummm....so you're saying that if I buy a 2.0 card for a 1.1 slot it will work but I'll just get the maximum performance of the highest 1.1 card?

No youll get the same performance as long as you have a single card its multi card arrays that would be affected.
