Ok, this is dumb. About 3 weeks ago, I had to wipe my hard drives and reinstall Windows due to a virus. I just found that I have another virus. I am kinda pissed at Windows now, and have been considering Ubuntu for some time now. So my question is: Should I switch permanantly to Ubuntu? And now some questions about Ubuntu:

1: Can I run all Windows based apps on Ubuntu?
1a: If not, how do I substitute?
2: Can Ubuntu get viruses?
2a: If so, is it easy to get rid / restore your PC back to normal?
3: Is it worth it?
4: What are the main pros / cons of Ubuntu?

Yachi, I know you use it, if you could help me out, that would be great!

Ubuntu is a great "starter" linux, and truth fully you dont need to move onto anything else

what i would suggest... (my setup)
1install windows configure with appropriate drivers and antivirus (recommend AVG)
2 install ubuntu (very very easy, literally just a few clicks)
this allows a dual-boot mode to windows (defualt being linux) so you can run those windows apps

HOWEVER for the fullfledged linux user you can
1 use a virtual machine to emulate windows (great alternative)
2 my personal favorite Wine, its not a windows emulator, it simply allow execution of windows program over linux kernel (with no loss in speed at all)

now to your questions...

1. NO you cant run ALL but you can run ALOT of them (you can run ALL with a virtual machine)
2. yes, but there are very few viruses for linux to start and ubuntu is security updated constantly so if there IS one you most likely wont get it, and yes its easy to fix, even if you have to delete everything but your files and reinstall all the originals (there are guides for this) but thats really a last resort
3. its free, and OHH YES its worth it, esspcially if you get it set up good, its faster\smoother\Faster\nicer-looking\ and FASTER than windows by far
4. hard to say... i would say
Pro:
Free (and legal Wink)
install applications without downloading them from a site (running a command like this 'sudo apt-get install "application-name"') most applications have a list preconfigured in ubuntu hardy
Cons:
truthfully the only thing i would say IS its not windows, as in it wont have the same support, but to me thats not really a con

what i suggest is download the iso and burn it to a disc
boot to the livecd (its very simple) and test it out without installing it yet, full functionality including the ability to install apps!

Ok, SO, I can run all Windows apps from Wine? I really don't want to virtual it (slow as f***) and you tell me Wine doesn't slow me down... Other than that, I think ima switch to Ubuntu!

Oh, do I need to install an antivirus or firewall (security programs) on Ubuntu? I mean if I don't will I still be safe?

Edit: I don't think I will dual boot, cause my 2nd hard drive is in my Xbox!

And thanks a bunch Gamez, you made it WAY easy for me to understand!

Edit 2: I am virtualizing Ubuntu right now. So where can I go to get tuts on it? Like how to install windows apps, how to switch the two bars (the top and bottom ones) ect...

1. NO you cant run ALL but you can run ALOT of them (you can run ALL with a virtual machine)

you can dual boot from the same harddrive, different partitions

and i personally dont have any antivirus programs, i mean im sure there are a few, but not nearly as many cuase there isnt the demand for them like windows has, just dont go to porn sites or do alot of p2p and you dont get a virus (and if you do again, nothing is really even affected beyond repair!)

as far as tutorials go, remember Ubuntu is a new operating environment to you, you will need to use google ALOT.

as far as windows apps (a few work, google to check compatibility i.e. "star wars knights of the old republic linux" and scan  the results)

to get wine, open a command prompt (aka terminal, proper term, its in  Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and type the following (or copy paste)

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine

it will ask for your password, its the one you told it for the main user account (or no password for liveCD)

EDIT: and for moving the bars from bottom to top... just drag like in windows, they switch sides for ya

DUDE quit thinking windows lol (and whats up with the burn speed comments, has no affect)
zzk what you need to is tell me what video card you have...
if you are running dual monitors, unplug one monitor, and that should fix the problem (you can plug it back in later) but tell me the video card and i can tell you what you are doing wrong
linux is different and its not as easy to configure if you arent used to it, but its well worth it, dont throw in the towel yet
as far as customizing, yes you can.. to no end, it puts windows to shame with what you can do, you can do ANYTHING you can think of and i mean that literally

I installed Ubuntu and I love it! its fast, simple looking, its all that Windows isn't. AND, I can customize EVERYTHING about it.

aint linux good Wink

EDIT: and zzk, nvidia now makes drivers to linux, so you can install those afterward with the following command

Code:
sudo get-apt install nvidia-glx-new
sudo get-apt install nvidia-settings

nvidia settings is a GUI to help configure your xorg.conf file (the based for video on the Xserver)

anyway linux rocks really

ok zzk, here is what you need to do
1. boot from the harddrive (for speed purposes)
2. after you see the atari screen wait 1 or 2 minutes
3. hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 (stops the x-server, takes you to command prompt)
4. login with whatever user name you choose at install (and the password as well)
5. after you are logged in you will need to type the following
Code:
sudo apt-get update
6. say yes give your password do what ever it asks
7. now for the nvidia drivers type
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new nvidia-settings
8. say 'y' or whatever it asks

now that thats all finished and the correct drivers are install (and i have a 6200 i just tested and those are the correct drivers) you will want to reboot using the command
Code:
sudo reboot

on restart you should be running the correct drivers (if not we can go from there, becuase then the correct drivers will be install and i can tell you how to implement them)

PS just so you guys now a little n00b breakdown of the commands i used
Code:
sudo - allows you to run as root (linux ADMIN) and you will need to use it ALOT
apt-get - you can 'get' quite  a few applications by typing apt-get install 'application name' no need to go searching the web
install - come on.. im not going to spell it out ;)

EDIT: oh and zzk, if you ARE using dual monitors, unplug one

No i don't have dual monitors

OK
1. I am starting to really HATE this crap LOL

2. the damn thing does NOT scroll when i type in commands  S0 i keep doing ctrl+alt+F7 then Back to ctrl+alt+F2 to see the crap =/

3. I did the Sudo apt-get update  and all Worked (I think) as i seen files installed.

4. BUT when i did the nvidia crap it just says
"Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package nvidia-glx-new is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source"

Idk Maybe you typed it wrong or this BS of a OS is trying to Piss me off.

Update...
I tryed  "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx" And it did a download  BUT did not fix it.

UPDATE.....
ok i did like 10 updates  and  then tryed the nvidia-glx-new and it worked  BUT... Still did not fix it.
