Title: How To FTP to your Xbox
Post by: NOS--- on July 18, 2005, 11:10:51 AM
I figured this thread is worth starting

1) What does an FTP program do?:

An FTP Program allows access to the Hard Drive of a computer or File Server

2) What does NIC mean?

Network Interface Card

3) How do I set up an FTP?

There are many ways to set up a FTP, Hard and Cheap or Easy and Expensive. Now this requires some basic Computer skills.

Easy and exspensive=Router
Router=35-45$
Ethernet cord=10$

Setting up FTP with an Router
1). Make all the connections. Connect the Cable or DSL modem to the Routers WAN port. Connect your PC to port #1 xbox to port #2.

2). Setting up SmartFTP(This is my program of choice, there is others like FlashFTP) Load up Evox or Ltools and write down the IP: (EX:192.168.0.3). Now type the Username and Password(The Defualts are xbox and xbox) then click connect and BAM you have FTP accese to the box.

Hard and cheap=2nd NIC and crossover cable.
2Nd NIC=5$
Xbox system link cord=14$

Setting up FTP with the 2nd NIC

1). Open up the PC and install the Secoend NIC,(Make shure power is unplugged and you have touched mare metal first) Load up Windows and install the Drivers for the NIC. Now With the system link cord, Connect one end to the xbox and the other to the new NIC. Now on the bottom toolbar Click "START" Then "Help And support" and in the "search" box type "ICS" without qouets. then under "Pick a task" select "Enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection" only follow step 1,2 and 3. MAke shure you are sharing your INTERNET connection not the xbox's connection.

2). Setting up SmartFTP(This is my program of choice, there is others like FlashFTP) Load up Evox or Ltools and write down the IP: (EX:192.168.0.3). Now type the Username and Password(The Defualts are xbox and xbox), then click connect and BAM you have FTP accese to the box.

It says my xbox is connected but i cannot connect with any FTP programs.

Try to use Internet Explorer. Open up Inter expoler and where you type in your webpag at the addres bar, type FTP://xbox:xbox@(Your xbox's IP goes here):21  Example, FTP://xbox:xbox@192.168.0.3:21

Please tell me if i missed something or if it's unclear!

ok youve convinced me, a friend has an NIC 4 me and i can *get hold of* an ethernet cable.

sorry 4 being dumb but what do u mean by 2nd NIC card? Just another NIC right? If i didn't want to connect to the internet at the same time as ftp in my xbox, could i use the NIC i have?

grrrrrr i hate being so computery dum, i need to read more stuff. . .

Listen You need a CROSSOVER STYLE ethernet cord. basicly an xbox system link cord. like i said go to www.ebay.com, get a free acount, buy a 50ft ethetnet CROSSOVER cable. and by 2nd NIC card i meen adding a secoend NIC card.(Sorry about confusion) please post if you have more questions .

right i have the NIC card and crossover ethernet cable, but i have not installed the card yet. I am using a shamefully older version of windows than xp (am waiting for longhorn *patience jebus patience*) and in my help & support section it has this option (once i have searched fo ICS):

Internet connection sharing with DCHP

is this the same thing renamed? or is it not optional yet as i have not installed the drivers or card?
i have read it but it seems to give no info on how to enable the internet sharing connection

OK, Now i must ask what kind of internet you use first. also what version of windows.

i like the way that no1 here takes the piss bcoz i am a 'n00b' and dont no what im doin alot of the time. So yeah i will ask questions here and maybe look elsewhere 2. If i have everything ready to go, i just want to get it done- not too bothered about who helps, just any1...

I have to been in same poosition(People not answering n00bish and stupid quetions.)

In a way you have waseted my time but yet i dont care, if you use many forums you will get mixed answers, mostly wrong ones.(you need to know the OS and system specs to truly enable ICS) and i was giving you help but hey

Title: Re: how to FTP your Xbox
Post by: SMD on July 21, 2005, 07:59:57 PM
C'mon dude. No time is wasted... Im sure when you get your new NIC we'll be able to get you up and running. While NOS is right about getting mixed answers even to the most basic questions... It's entirely possible, with such a wide spectrum of ideas and solutions, that you'll find just what your looking for, even if it's not here. But WE ARE ALWAYS willing to give it a try.

This forum is just starting out... obviously... (15 members... 3-5 of which actually post heh) My goal, eventually, is to have this be a one-stop solutions for almost any Soft Mod / Xbox question. Noobish or not.

Once again, you guys are awesome..... keep it up. I'll try to post more... I read it everyday though. :) If that counts for anything.

Once the wizard has finished it says: 'netconn has caused an error in 'NETCONN.exe'' os something v similar.
also the smartftp says:

Now is you (DSL)MODEM connect to your comupter by a USB cord or a cord like the system link? make shure you are sharing you INTERNET connecting, not you XBOX connection. and is you xbox ON? also, if it says 1 computer is connected to your connection, you xbox is not connected. i woulod like to take over you system over the net and do this myself, and get you running.(dont worry, SMD did it to mine, that is how he fixed my box) right click "My Computer" and select "FIND" and search EVERYTHING and type, "Remote Assistance" then find a shortcut with that name. and at the bottem it will say save as an E-Mail Attachment, click that and send it to Nitrious@gmail.com

Hmm... im not exactly sure... Speaking of of the top of my head.. It's trying ot connect to rndom ports... 38588 or something like that.  Make sure you using port 21 and s far as pasv mode goes... if it's on turn it off and if it's off turn it on. Also... what ftp program are you using. Got to, in Internet explorer, ftp://192.168.0.2:21     and go to fille login as and enter your stuff.... if you can connect then it's a problem w/ your ftp program... i recomment smart ftp. but evertime i reccomend a program or a soft mod .... I GET REAMED FOR BEING OUTDATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! j/k. let me know how that goes.

Sorry about the sp. errors. Im doing this on my xbox.... the screen is a little blurry.

LOL! NOS - quit telling people i fixed our box... its nasty duder. lol. j/k. If my previous post was asinine it's cuz the resolution on my xbox is only 800x600 and i couldn't see the second page of this thread. So you can disregard it you'd like.

I installed Gentoox on my F:, it took up 4 gigs.. and it's a fully functional Linux box now... But i can still play games on it and do everything else. It's now just a menu item... "Linux" I select it and it boots up... It's awesome. I can ssh into my xbox and well, do what ever I want. Pretty cool if you ask me. It's free too.  Search Xbox Linux in google. Good stuff. BTW I was just running FireFox on my xbox and checking the forum.

(you need to know the OS and system specs to truly enable ICS)

ICS is just a M$ thing, not even real.

You want the real deal then read up on NAT and masquerading, these are real technologies not fluffy windows icing that get people confused in the first place.. If M$ would call things by the correct name instead of using bollocks made up terms like this then the world would be more seamless and people would only have to learn things once instead of twice, the m$ way and the Real way.

Title: Re: How To FTP your Xbox
Post by: jebus989 on November 04, 2005, 10:15:00 AM
oh yeah, with my new found 'expertise' i realised that setting up ICS can be confusing and is un neccesary (for FTPing to the xbox). Just plug the xbox to the pc and adjust your TCP ports IP to match your dashboard settings for PCs IP...

Im currently using my xbox as a portable memory for transfering shiznit onto my brand spanking new (but not yet online) pc... kinda makes me wish the Ethernet port was at the front of the damn thang... psh bah flah etc.

well it seems to me like you have conflicting software issues.
try disabling your auto protect / firewall / whatever

if you still have problems type this into IE: ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.1.103:21
if you can acces it this way, change port/passive values on smartFTP or alternatively, try another FTP prgram (i personally reccoment cuteFTP)

hope this helps
let me know

Hey man,

Get look@lan you can find it here. : http://www.snapfiles.com/dlnow/rdir.dll?id=106049 - it's simple im sure you can get it.. just install and run. It'll list every item on your network. And it will also tell you which one is your xbox.. it'll read (not windows).

Once you determine which ip your xbox is using puch that in smart ftp. Then username xbox password xbox. If that still doesn't work change the settings on your xbox to dhcp.. you can change  this in evox settings. Then reboot, restart look@lan and find the ip.. then try that. It will most likely work. Let us know.

192.168.1.1 is your router IP

open your network connection
and goto details and look up your

IP: 192.168.1.100
SUBNETMASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFUALT GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
DNS SERVER: 192.168.1.13

then set your xbox to DHCP and read what the IP address off your TV screen when the xbox is turned on
if you IP is 192.168.1.100
and you xbox is the only other thing on the network, the xbox IP will be
192.168.1.101
user = xbox
pass= xbox
port 21

good luck

hey I have a problem with this stuff. The password doesn't seem to work. Everytime I put in the username and password it says the username is not correct. I have the EvolutionX V+3921 and the game loads automatically everytime I insert it. Also I don't know how to access the evox.ini file everyone talks about sorry for being such a noob but I get frustrated with this stuff...and another thing which type of disc do you recomend for backing up games? the DVD-R or DVD+R because with the DVD+R I haven't been able to make any game to run properly but fighting games

One thing worth mentioning that other might come up against -- I couldn't enable ICS, getting an error saying the ip address needed was already used (paraphrased). I had to go to my router and reset it's ip address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 to get this to work. After that, ICS worked fine.

Awesome tutorial, I can FTP my ass off!

Change your xbox to static ip and put in 192.168.1.200 as the ip, and then change your pc ip address to 192.168.1.201 .

Launch up flash and try to connect with  username: xbox
                                                                 password: xbox

First, thanks for this guide!
2nd I'd like to say that :

Having 2 NICs connected to your PC, HELPS ALOT TO SOLVE THE XBOX UNCONECTABLE FTP!

I was trying to connect to my xbox for the last 3 weeks, with only one NIC in my PC and I never got it to run. Untill I've passed trow this thread, added another NIC, loaded my Unleash-X, started XBMC, to see if it helped, at first I didn't notice s**t, until all of a suden I see NEWS scrolling down , I was WTF?! I went to the Weather option and it worked! ****! first thing I did... IS TO BACKUP MY XBOX "CDRive", "EEPROM", "UDATA" and "TDATA" folders!

THANKS TO THE SMDEPOT FORUM USERS!

make your xbox's network settings like this, going through the hub

IP address: 169.254.244.202
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 169.254.244.2
DNS server: 169.254.244.2

Where in the unleashX menu is this done?

I may already have a printer set at

 IP address: 169.254.244.202
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 169.254.244.2
DNS server: 169.254.244.2

Guess I coud set it at

IP address: 169.254.244.203    or   169.254.244.204
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 169.254.244.2
DNS server: 169.254.244.2

I assume that would not make a difference on 203 or 204

I will try this tonight. I hope this takes care of the problem.
Please get back to me on how to mod the FTP settings on the xbox

Thanks,
Clay

what exactly is a router. how would i do this if i had wireless?

router is what splits your internet to all the pc's / xbox's in your house, and wireless is the same as wired, you just need to know the ip address of what you want to connect 2

about the LINUX.... i have the game save for splinter cell on my AR memory card, so i just load up the game and go to the game save and it sould download the program??

Title: Re: How To FTP to your Xbox

You have to copy the gamesave off of your memory card onto the xbox then launch splinter cell and choose that gamesave to load. Then you will get a screen with all the options like backup eeprom install softmod etc. First you want to backup the eeprom then install the softmod. All of it is straight-forward so it won't be too hard.

Well your xbox has to be softmodded first then you can ftp. You type this in IE exactly ftp://xbox:xbox@YOURIPHERE

Here's an updated tutorial (http://smdepot.net/news/?page_id=24)

Ok my IP is the one that i find on the xbox after i have turned it on and after it has been softmodded by the LINUX program for the Splinter cell game save. Then i can use the FTP in internet explorer to find the proper programs?

You can then use the Internet Explorer to view the contents of the Xbox and then go to our Files (http://www.smdepot.net/files.html) section to download any Applications that you might want to put on the Xbox.

If you want instant access to all the good Applications, Emulators and Homebrew games then you can check out the Team SMD Auto-Installer that I made in the Files (http://www.smdepot.net/files.html) section also.

you need the password
username: xbox
password: xbox
those are the defaluts

if that doesnt help, just make sure your console is set using a static IP (if you want) so it wont change, and try using defualt internet explorer, that might help

ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.0.3:21 (or whatever your IP is)
