Post by: realg123 on November 08, 2010, 12:35:45 PM
Hi everyone. Quick question. Is it legal to download roms/games that you own for backup purposes?

It's all where you live really  :-[  But for the most part it's never legal LOL

That's why we/others keep away from rom hosting.

Thanks!
I thought it was okay if you owned the original copy.
How are all these other sites who host roms still up?
Some of them don't host them but do give direct links to megaupload or what not so would that make it legal?

yes and No.
You see with a Megaupload link your not hosting the files so your not really breaking the Law  ;)

And again it's all about where you live, Some places say Yes you can own the copy IF you have the game YET.. other places say NO!! you can't have a copy even if you Own it.

Thus why it's hard to just get a Yes/No answer about if you can or can't have/host roms.

For what i know even in the places where it's ok to have a backup it's NEVER ok to host your backups.

They charge people a small fee for hosting or the service they provide for the roms on their site. And they also place ads on in site to get credit.
