Title: Hard drive
Post by: realg123 on March 17, 2008, 10:30:00 PM
I have installed a 320 gig hard drive on my xbox, I would like to upgrade to a 500 gb. Now my question is do i follow the same instructions as to formatting the 500 gb. Instructions i used were: http://www.smdepot.net/forum/index.php?topic=176.0

when you use xboxhdm to create your 500 gig harddrive it will ask you do you want to format F and partition it. choose yes.
also when you install it back into your xbox and go to "run linux" from one of the game saves (Krazies NDure )
when you pop in the game again and goto "runlinux" after it's modded it'll have an "extras" option, choose that and you can format F there as well.
this will work if you choose NKPATCHER 06
this makes it all 1 large F partition. and no G is needed.

Thanks boost for the quick reply I have a few more questions.
1) What is the password for extras
2) Isnt NKPatcher 06 only for hdds that are 120gb and below?
3) After softmod is done, I guess there would be no point of formatting g? and using http://www.smdepot.net/forum/index.php?topic=176.0 tutorial to format it. I used this to format my 320 gig and everything worked out fine.
5) I heard 500 gb have cluster problems, and at times would loose your info stored on it, is this true?
Thanks again

and in the menu try to put both your 320 and 500 gb drives connected to your comp that way you can copy your 30 to your 500 and not lose all your data. oh and make sure to study the linux drive labels

any HDD bigger then 400G (or really 200G) should set .67 for F: and G:  if you set ALL on F: you can/will get corrupted data after placeing to much data on the Drive.

I only point this out as i have expertised this myself

+ with a 500g i beleave you need to change the clusters with a program Witch for the life of me i can't remeber.

Yes i beleave thats it (xboxpartion)

just after you make the new drive with .67 and format G: use xboxpartion  and all should be good.

I just uploaded xbpartitioner to my E drive and formatted both 6 and 7 (F and G) with one of the preset options and it split my 750 into 370/370 or something to that effect. Whatever it works out to. But it did fix any issues and I've since filled it and I haven't run into any problems since. F and G don't necessarily need to be formatted before you use it since it's going to format them anyway

i formatted it with 16k is that okay?

it should be, the cluster for the normal drivers is 16k i believe
the 500gb default is 32k (im pretty sure) so dropping it to 16 should work fine

16k would be safer i imagine
it is the default after all

I forget if mine is 16 or 32. Write to it first to test. Mine worked without issues the first time until I filled it to about the 350 mark or so and then I had issues. It wouldn't transfer anything and I lost a lot of data. So write a bunch of data to it first to test

yeah thats the save beat
an easy way to do this is copy a game to the HDD in ISO mode and simply copy the game from the HDD into several different directories and see if you come up with problems

i think the 32k is for HDDS over 500gigs

I think so too. I'm too lazy to check but if you see the option for 32, go for it.
