Title: Removing the green backing of your Xbox jewel...
Post by: skip2mylou on March 16, 2007, 10:27:04 PM
hey you guys, i was trying to make a clear jewel for my xbox from my existing stock one. so i managed to get the jewel off the box with a butter knife with minimal damage. and now it was time to get the sticky stuff off. i did that with my fingers and got it done all good. but the hardest part was getting the green backing off. i read online that i should sand it, or use Brasso, or whatever. i sanded with my dremel cuz i didnt have real sandpaper. needless to say i f'ed up my jewel. plus it has all these scratches from the sanding. knowing that the damaged could not be reversed, i took the experience as a lesson learned. now that the worst had happened, i figured that id try to get the remaining green off just for the hell of it. i used nail polish remover and the green slided off! however the jewel had a huge crack in the middle...

NEVER USE Nail polish remover to remove the green backing from the Xbox jewel, the jewel will crack.

just thought id share that with you. later.

PS> anyone know where i can find XB jewels for cheap? anyone willing to donate ;)

Do not Use polish remover at ALL

My frist Time I poored polish remover on the Damn thing LOL

my Second time I just rubbed it on and it worked But about 1 day later it started to Crack in the Mid
At that Point it started gettng worse But it did Not Crack all the Way So now it's a Clear Jewel With a Nice Crack in the Mid  =/

Just a Small Bit of polish remover gets in the Little crack where the Word Xbox is at you Are DOOMED
i mean all i used was a Very Damp rag with polish remover and wiped it off And it still got a Crack in the Mid

SO i Say Never USE polish remover ..

Title: Re: Removing the green backing of your Xbox jewel...

if you start coarse and work your way to a very fin grit, you can smooth out the back where it isnt scratched, just a heads up, if you dont want it to have a snowy feel to it, dont use industrial strength degreaser

after you use a Very Fin grade on it use some tooth past on it =) makes it Shine Nice

ok it sounds like sanding is the way to go. what grit types did u use? i read that leaving it frosted achieves a better light distribution if u wanna light the jewel...  is that true?

haha skip, nicely done...
however, fine sandpaper aint that easy to get from school, the very fine ones are in storage..
but find the teacher at a VERY busy time, and ask if you can go grab one for your latest project. you'll be fine

well thats how it is here... humm
the jewel... does having it clear give it a cool look? i thought it would look ugly w/ no lights..

hehe, ill take the advice torob.

hmm, good question... i plan on lighting the area where the jewel is, thats the only reason id clear the green.

$25, no way... check this site, jewels for $3.99 >>>Decal Girl (http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/2,171.htm).
this one might help too >>>Game Console Skins (http://www.gameconsoleskins.com/interface.htm?content=http%3A//www.gameconsoleskins.com/skins/xbox/topjewels/xbox-jewel-detail/480/50.htm).
there were also a few hits on ebay, but shipping is deep... >>>Ebay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=xbox+jewel).

good luck.

Title: Re: Removing the green backing of your Xbox jewel...
Post by: skip2mylou on March 19, 2007, 05:32:38 PM
yeah decal girl has it all.

i wanted to go for the official look too, i really like the xbox log printed on the jewel. so even with the crack in mine, im gonna sand and frost it and install lights. i have a feeling the crack wont look too bad after the whole thing is completed.

Title: Re: Removing the green backing of your Xbox jewel...

holy cow, decalgirl is cheap as BEEP
i want to actually get somethin..
this caught my eye
Code:
http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/4,1761.htm
The 12 piece plus a controller....
and a Jewel
Code:
http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/4,2071.htm

it'll look nice and pretty cheap too a small $19.49
but uhm..
the jewels, they are just skins arent they? they just go over actual jewel? or will you have to take the "xbox" jewel off and put this under it?

Title: Re: Removing the green backing of your Xbox jewel...
Post by: skip2mylou on March 19, 2007, 10:37:36 PM

regular softscrub works wonders for removing the green.  us a dremel with the buffing tip and some softscrub, you wont be disappointed.

I tried really fine sandpaper on mine when I got it off, but it didn't work. The letting it soak in abrasive chemicals seems to do the trick better. The sandpaper completely fubard my jewel.

the abrasive chemicals do a great job of getting the green off, but they damage the plastic and make the jewel brittle. my jewel has a big crack in the middle. but the chemicals do get the green off.
